Red Maeng Da Kratom

Red Maeng what, you ask?  Red maeng da, a subtype of Maeng da, comes from the exotic Kratom plant.  It is a wonderful and natural herb that holds many different benefits to include feelings of relaxation or stimulation.  Yeah, you read that right.  It can elicit either one!  How?! Keep reading, and we will explore!

3 Colors & 3 Wonderful Purposes

Mitragyna speciosa, or commonly known as Kratom, is a tropical evergreen plant from Southeast Asia.[i] It has been used for centuries because it possesses a myriad of health benefits.  There are three main strains of the plant which include red, green and white.  If you think of a traffic light, the effects are the pretty much same.  The green strain is a mood booster and mild stimulant, the effects of which are often compared to coffee.  Think of a green light—we’re happy when the light is in our favor and we can just keep going without having to slow down, especially when we’re running late.  What about yellow? Well, if we’re going to be honest, most of us speed up when we see yellow.  If you’re part of the 1% that doesn’t, well, you probably have fewer tickets than the rest of us.  The yellow strain is considered a bit stronger than green.  Many users claim it is also a mood booster and energizer.  The red strain, on the other hand, is a powerful analgesic (painkiller), ceasing any pain and ending the suffering.  In this article, we will focus on the latter strain, and explore the many benefits of Red Maeng Da.

The Nightmare of Chronic Pain

As an analgesic, this strain has helped thousands of people live a more normal life and be able to cope with their pain.  Chronic pain can be debilitating.  Trying to enjoy a healthy life seems impossible when everything hurts.  Chronic pain syndrome is associated with many different comorbidities.  It also takes an enormous toll on mental health as many who suffer from this also experience poor quality of life.

Lives Forever Changed

As an opioid-like medicine, red maeng’s pain killing abilities can help people take control over their lives again.  The use of the strain is often seen in those who suffer from include arthritis, cancer, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, IBS, IBD, migraines, nerve damage, and various other chronic pain conditions.  Other uses can include anxiety/depression, chest pain, cough, diabetes, diarrhea, and high blood pressure.  Some even swear improves sexual performance.  And it is well known in aiding addicts who experience withdrawal symptoms from opiates when weaning off these dangerous drugs, making the transition easier and more successful.

Along with living pain-free, fans of red maeng da often report they have more energy, increased focus, better concentration, and increased stamina.  This wonder-drug is giving life back to those who have suffered from chronic pain.  And the best part is that there is absolutely nothing synthetic about it, unlike pharmaceutical alternatives which are currently causing an opioid crisis.

How Does It Work? The Answer is in the Alkaloids

What makes red maeng da so good at its job?  The answer the large number of alkaloids that are present in the red strain of Kratom.  An alkaloid is considered any class of a (naturally occurring) nitrogenous organic compound of a plant.  Alkaloids are known to have significant effects on the physiological systems of human beings.[ii]  Other drugs with high alkaloid content include atropine, codeine, and even caffeine.  All of these high alkaloid content drugs have pronounced effects that assist the body in many different ways.

Note that kratom alkaloids are known as partial agonists of mu-opioid receptors.[iii]  In other words, the ultimate effect is still below the standards of what can be achieved with a full agonist such as morphine.  No matter how much is taken, the notorious stupor- popular among opioid addicts- will never be achieved with kratom.  It’s a powerful drug…but not THAT powerful.

Sip, Swallow, Smoke, or Chew.  The Choice is Up to You

The different preparations of red maeng da plant all act on the central nervous system, easing pain and promoting relaxation.  There are many ways to enjoy the red strain. Typically users diffuse the leaves in tea or grind the leaves into a powder and mix this into food.  It can also be taken in pill form, which is most convenient.  The herb can also be smoked or vaped if desired.  With its’ recent spike in popularity, extracts, gels, and even gum are all available now via the internet.[iv]  However, if you are a traditionalist, you can simply chew on the fresh leaves. This is the way it was used for thousands of years in Southeast Asia.

A word of advice: kratom powder does not mix very well with water. Therefore it is recommended that the powder is mixed with flavored milk, juice, a smoothie, or yogurt.  Unless you think you will actually love that weird texture.  Bottoms up!

Different Effects

Effects from red maeng will also depend on the individual’s tolerance level and genetics.  Tolerance levels must be managed in order to maintain the effects of the drug.  Results may vary in each product as each source naturally yields a different amount of alkaloids.

Be Smart—But Please Use Caution!

Every strain of Kratom is known to be safe.  It has yet to be formally proven as harmful to anyone.  The only cases in which people have been harmed have only been when other, more dangerous drugs such as cocaine, heroin, etc., were used in conjunction with kratom.  Many believe that it is impossible actually to overdose because exceedingly high doses of kratom induce vomiting.

You should not drive any kind of vehicle or operate any machinery when you are under the influence of kratom as it can have very strong effects and possibly delay your reaction time.  Some possible side effects of red maeng da included delayed digestion, suppressed appetite, and dry mouth.  Rarer side effects may include anxiety, insomnia, frequent urination and constipation.

Let’s Review Some Studies

Two studies that were carried out in Malaysia have shown the possibility of kratom as an effective alternative to opioids.  Of 136 people who claimed they used kratom, 90% claimed they used it as a substitute for opioids and 84% claimed it helped with their withdrawal symptoms.[v]

In the second study, researchers surveyed 293 men. 15% reported that they had used kratom to reduce or stop the use of other various drugs and manage withdrawal successfully.  [vi]

Finally, the results of an internet study in the US found that of 8,049 respondents, half admitted to turning to kratom to help kick their opioid habit.[vii]  Roughly ¾ of those respondents reported more energy and better mood with less anxiety.  Those who took 1 gram or less reported a boost in energy.  Significant decreases in depression and anxiety were also correlated with around 5 grams.[viii]

The statistics speak for themselves here, folks!

We’ll Leave You with These Thoughts…

Red Maeng Da Kratom has several health benefits that warrant further study.  Those who were once forced to live with chronic pain have a safer, more sustainable alternative to live pain-free and take control of their lives again. Carpe Diem!
